While many of her friends had saved and splurged on the monumental mid-university six week trip through Europe, one Adelaide girl took the plunge and decided to stay at home this winter .
But Chloe, 22, admits it’s been a challenge to distract herself from the fact that she isn’t eating crepes in front of the Eiffel Tower or chasing hot Euro boys around Barcelona.
“It’s just so hard to compete on Instagram and Facebook during winter — even if I upload a pic in revealing activewear with my Labrador puppy, I’ve got friends uploading photos of themselves on Croatian cruise theme nights,” Chloe said.
“Wearing practically nothing in Europe is the gateway to likes.”
Chloe’s mother, Bec, 53, says it’s been tough for her daughter, who she has found sobbing on numerous occasions this winter.
“I heard her crying in her room and was like ‘What honey? What’s up?’,” Bec said.
“And she was like ‘Mikki just did one of those photos where you lean against the Tower of Pisa and pretend you’re pushing it’ — she continued to burst out into tears.”
Chloe says the salt was really rubbed into the wound when her best friend uploaded a photo with the hashtag “#wishingclowashere”.
“I honestly don’t know how I’m going to cope with this for another four weeks,” Chloe said.
